Print: Otl Aicher 1972 Munich Olympics Branding & Design
This is probably of little relevance to our specific area of design, but this is too good to be missed.
I stumpled upon this very interesting site, selling and displaying items made for the 1972 Olympic games.
It’s my favourite branding of any Olympics so far and represents for me modernist design in perfection. The use of colours and simple design really do it for me. Lead designer of the campaign has been the german Otl Aicher. Here’s an interesting Wikipedia outtake:
‘Aicher may be best known for being the lead designer for the 1972 Munich Olympics. He created a new set of pictograms that paved the way for the ubiquitous stick figures currently used in public signs. He also created the first official Olympic Mascot, a striped dachshund named Waldi.’
